Babywearing and the miracle hormone oxytocin

Babywearing is being celebrated around the world during October using the theme “Love transforms” and this diary is part 2 of our International Babywearing blogs. If you missed part 1: 10 reasons why parents love using a baby carrier you can read it here: (link to part 1 ).

Today, we are going to delve into the topic of oxytocin, the love hormone.  Are you ready?

Oxytocin: more than just a cuddle hormone

Physical closeness to your baby, ideally skin to skin, produces a neurohormone called oxytocin.

oxytocin is considered a bonding hormone and is therefore very important for child development. It also promotes milk production and helps to make breast/chest feeding possible. oxytocin is not only possible between mother and child when they cuddle, snuggling with your partner also produces oxytocin. During sex, our bodies are virtually flooded with it. It increases pleasure and creates a feeling of deep connection between two sexual partners during orgasm.

Oxytocin for a quick birth

The name of the neurohormone originally comes from ancient Greek and means “quick birth”. And it is precisely from obstetrics that oxytocin is predominantly known. During pregnancy, your hypothalamus (the place where the hormone originates) works at full speed to produce oxytocin for birth. This is because it is also responsible for inducing labour.

Human relationships need oxytocin

Although for decades the hormone was only known as a birth hormone, it plays a role in the coexistence of all people. It positively influences social behaviour, makes us more empathetic, promotes pair bonding, strengthens trust in other people and can dampen fear and aggression. Oxytocin can lower stress hormone levels and regulate heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar and breathing rate. In animal studies it has even been found to promote growth and help wounds heal faster. These are all valuable effects that can benefit not only your child, but you as well. We encourage you to let your oxytocin release run at full speed and carry your babies as often and if it feels good for both of you. Your bodies and souls will thank you!
