Or is it not a carrier at all - should you start with a baby wrap?
It’s probably not easy to answer this question. That's why we want to share what you should look out for when looking for a baby carrier for you to use with your newborn, and give you an overview of your options. With our help, it will hopefully be easier for you to find the best baby carrier for you.
Which baby carriers are suitable for newborns?
At Ergobaby, we attach great importance to ensuring that you and your little one thrive together in this whole new world. Right from birth. This includes supporting both physical and emotional well-being. And because we know that a newborn baby has very special needs, we have special ergonomic baby carriers in our portfolio that have been developed precisely for these little beings - all certified by the Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR) and with the ErgoPromise Limited Lifetime Guarantee. They all ensure that you can always carry your little miracle close to your heart, simultaneously enjoying cuddles and providing them with the best physical support.

For wrap fans: the stretchy baby wrap
Our Aura Baby Wrap is available in two versions, one made of cosy knitted fabric and one made of breathable mesh material. Both versions are cosy and soft and, thanks to the slightly stretchy material, fit both your newborn baby and any body shape and size, perfectly. They support your little one in the key areas and are still elasticated so that your baby feels completely comfortable and is not constricted. An orientation edge and differently coloured seams provide beginners with helpful support when tying the wrap, so that your baby is snuggled up to you safely and securely in the ergonomic spread-squat position, which is appropriate for their age and development. Our Aura Wrap can be used from birth up to around 12 months of age or from 3.2 kg to 11.3 kg.
Simple and gentle: the newborn baby carrier
Or if you think you’ll prefer a more structured carrier but still want the softness and stretchiness of a wrap… then try our Ergobaby Embrace. Because that's exactly what it does: it embraces your little one gently and supportively from birth. It is ideal for all those who want to keep things simple and cosy in the early days, weeks and months. The Embrace baby carrier for newborns is easy to put on with just three buckles and automatically holds your little one in the ergonomic spread-squat position - without any tying. The waist belt and the fanning shoulder straps made of soft jersey fabric distribute your baby's weight evenly across your upper body. You’ll barely even feel like you're wearing a carrier and yet you still enjoy all the benefits. The Embrace is also available in a more breathable mesh version - for even more air circulation inside the carrier on hot days or for those of you who work up a sweat quickly. This newborn baby carrier can be used from a weight of 3.2 kg to 11.3 kg, i.e. from birth until around one year old.

One for all: the baby carrier
The brand new ergonomic Omni Deluxe baby carrier, as well as our Adapt and Aerloom carriers, can also be used from birth. The Omni Deluxe is our newest and best baby carrier and guarantees ergonomic support from birth. Its big advantage: it grows with your baby right through toddlerhood, as you can easily adjust the carrier to suit their age and development - for healthy physical development. How? You simply adjust the width of the panel and the headrest so that your child is always supported in an age-appropriate way. This means you can use these carriers over a longer period of time and discover the world together with your little wonder.
Right from the start, your newborn baby will find the support he or she needs to feel safe and secure in the Omni Deluxe. The baby carrier is available in three fabric choices: either completely made of breathable mesh material or in a cotton or linen version. Whichever option you choose, they all keep baby close to you and are comfortable to wear.
The new Omni Deluxe carrier
With this newest version of our Omni carrier, the integrated headrest buttons are hidden for a more streamlined design and it offers you more storage space than ever before! A total of six compartments are hidden in its sleek design. You can attach a muslin to one of them with the help of a small elastic band, there is also space for a dummy clip, spare nappy, wet wipes, wallet, keys and your smartphone. And if you need some light weather protection or privacy for baby, the Omni Deluxe also has an integrated hood.
It's not just your newborn baby that feels cosy in the Omni Deluxe. You also benefit from the well-padded shoulder straps and the hip belt with additional lumbar support (also with storage!), which distribute your baby's weight evenly across your body. This may not be so much when they’re a teeny, scrunchy newborn, but they grow fast and this weight steadily increases and puts more and more strain on you depending on how long you carry your baby. By about six months old you’ll be glad you chose the Omni. The Omni Deluxe can be used from birth (from 3.2 kg) up to a weight of 20.4 kg.
Baby carrier for newborns: what you should look out for
Which model you choose is of course up to you. However, the best baby carrier for newborns should all meet the following criteria:
- Ergonomic design
A baby carrier for newborns must be designed in such a way that your newborn sits in the ergonomic spread-squat position as soon as you have them in the carrier. This means that the thighs are well supported and the knees are higher than their bum. This helps ensure the developmentally appropriate, slightly rounded shape of the newborn's back. Newborn carriers that are AGR-certified fulfil this requirement. - Head and neck support
Because your little miracle is not yet able to hold their head up on their own, your baby carrier should provide suitable head and neck support. If you wish to use your carrier for years to come then this should be adjustable so that it fits baby for as long as they need the support. - High-quality, breathable material
A baby carrier for newborns should be made of soft, breathable material. This prevents overheating and heat/perspiration rashes. Mesh offers the ultimate breathability and so do natural materials like cotton and linen. - Appropriately sized for baby
The carrier panel shouldn’t be so big that it covers baby’s head or face, it should finish no higher than level with the middle of their ear for newborns. If it comes up higher than that then your little one is still too small for the carrier. - Easy handling
Choose a carrier that is easy and intuitive to put on and take off, especially if you are new to babywearing. Our Embrace carrier has just three quick clips and our new Omni Deluxe baby carrier now has strap markings to make it even easier not only to adjust the carrier to any body shape, but also to swap it quickly and easily between carers. You can also find all our instruction videos on our YouTube channel and more on our Instagram. - Safety and ergonomics
Make sure that your baby carrier meets general safety and ergonomics standards. This can be indicated, for example, by the certificate from the Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR) association or the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI). You can also look for extra safety features like elastic loops near the buckles and reflectors to make you more visible when walking in the dark. - Age- and development-appropriate adjustability
Depending on how long you want to use your carrier, you should be able to adjust the carrier to suit baby's age, size and stage of development. A carrier that grows with your baby in this way can be used for longer and is therefore more sustainable. Did you know that the special technology of Ergobaby’s baby carriers ensures that newborns have a particularly deep seat for a developmentally appropriate position? On our Adapt and Omni models, the two Velcro fastening straps on the waistbelt provide this fit, which you won't find on any other carrier.
What’s right for you: the best newborn baby carrier
Safe and secure, cosy and ergonomically supported - that's how your little one should feel in their newborn baby carrier. No matter whether it’s a wrap or a carrier (one specially made for newborns or longer lasting). Everyone is different and has different needs. Fortunately, there are multiple options that meet all the important requirements so we’re sure you’ll find what you are looking for in your search for the best newborn baby carrier.
